BIO
Founded in January 2017, this is the first team in the historic city of York for nearly half a century. With growing interest, the first training session started in the early parts of 2017. Soon, word spread of the newly formed club and both men and women attended training from all over the North Yorkshire area, all with a common interest of playing Gaelic games. The overwhelming numbers at training meant we were able to field a men’s team and also a women’s team. The games in the first year were challenging as we faced teams around Yorkshire who had the experience of playing together for many seasons. With great grit and determination, we were able to field a team for every match and challenge well established clubs.
However, in our first year it was not all business and no pleasure. We had a great sense of community within the club and we had many days out including the York Irish Association’s St. Patrick’s Day festival, days at York races, York 7’s tournament, the York Éireannach awards night and the 12 pubs of Christmas. Every event was a great success and thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended.
The York Irish Association’s St. Patrick’s Day festival saw an amazing celebration of Irish culture right in the centre of York city. The festival gained a huge interest from many visitors who danced the night away to some amazing artists playing traditional Irish music.
The York Éireannach race day was a fantastic day out. A combination of great weather, great people, great scenery, some losers and some winners. Overall a tremendously enjoyable day spent on the Knavesmire and an even better night spent on the dancefloor.
This brought us to our main event of the summer, the York 7’s tournament. Teams attended from across the UK and this led to an extremely competitive afternoon of Gaelic football. It was great to see teams staying after the tournament to watch the All Ireland football final between Mayo and Kerry and then join us for food and entertainment in York, allowing our club to play host to our visitors for the day.
The York Éireannach awards night and 12 pubs of Christmas allowed for our members to enjoy 2 consecutive nights out on the same weekend. Some amazing players were awarded for their contribution and talent throughout the year. The 12 pubs of Christmas again saw all of our members come together in their finest Christmas attire. Many of our members live away from home so it is always nice to get together and socialise in a traditional fashion.
We heavily rely on building a community and maintaining team spirit, so all of these social events importantly contribute towards making everyone feel welcome. None of this so far would be possible without our founders, committee members, club members and our amazing sponsors. Our sponsors have provided us with jerseys, training sports-wear, training accessories and much more. It is also important to mention our home ground York St. John’s playing fields. So far, York Éireannach’s home pitch has received amazing reviews and it is unexplainable how lucky we are to have a home ground of such high standard. We are extremely grateful for a pitch that can facilitate 2 training sessions a week, high quality changing rooms, storage area, parking facilities, indoor sports hall for winter and a pavilion which overlooks our pitch.
With a fantastic start to our first year we had a lot to look forward to on our second season. We hope all of our members, followers, friends and family members have enjoyed our journey so far and continue to support our amazing club.
Thank you.
